One for the Money by Janet Evanovich

Book Club Pick – Jan. 2013

Jersey gal, Stephanie Plum, may be broke but she's too feisty to shy away from doing what has to be done. She takes up a job as a bounty hunter with her cousin, Vinnie. Her first assignment is tracking down Joe Morelli who has jumped bail and is wanted for murder. Morelli also happens to be the one who deflowered the teenage Stephanie several years back, and she still harbors some unresolved feelings for him. Her pursuit of Joe leads here to shady neighborhoods and dangerous characters; but she is determined to get her man, and more importantly, her money.

Along the way, Plum sustains some injury and humiliation, but also learns a bit of self-defense. When we see Morelli breaking his cover to save her neck, and cooking an appetizing meal for his would-be captor, you pretty much realize that this is the start of, if not a beautiful friendship, at least some sexual tension that will simmer through several books, leaving the reader to guess at the possible culmination of their relationship.

This is the first of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum novels. The reasons for the popularity of the series are understandable with the likable protagonist, the recreation of a tough New Jersey that stays true to its stereotypes, and, the combination of broad humor and quick-witted action.
